Bangladesh Recalls Diplomats From Kolkata & Tripura

Nobokontho Desk: Two senior Bangladeshi diplomats in India were “urgently” recalled on Thursday amid the rising tensions between both nations, according to sources.

Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Tripura, Arif Mohammad, and Acting Deputy High Commissioner in Kolkata, Sikder Mohammad Ashraful Rahman, have been urgently recalled to Dhaka. Recent alarming incidents prompted the recall, and they were instructed to report to Dhaka on very short notice.

According to diplomatic sources in New Delhi, the two diplomats have been reportedly asked to work from Dhaka until further instruction.

Earlier this week, a group led by a reactionary organization named “Hindu Sangharsa Samiti” in Agartala, India, entered the premises of the Bangladesh High Commission, staging protests and carrying out acts of vandalism. Despite the presence of law enforcement, the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission was attacked during the unrest.

In response to this situation, Bangladeshi diplomats in Tripura and Kolkata were instructed to return to Dhaka indefinitely. Both officials complied with the 24-hour notice and have already reported to Dhaka. The decision is believed to be a reaction to incidents such as the burning of the Bangladeshi national flag and effigies. This recall has left the Kolkata Deputy High Commission without senior diplomatic representation, although visa operations remain unaffected.

On November 28, an attack on the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala resulted in the vandalism of the flagpole and the burning of the national flag. Following this, the interim government announced the suspension of all activities at the High Commission.
